Filling
- 2 lbs tart apples, peeled, quartered, cored, chopped
- 2 lbs pears, peeled, quartered, cored, chopped
- 1 bag (12oz) cranberries (about 3 cups)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¾ teaspoon ground cardamom
Topping
- 1 ¼ cups rolled oats
- 1 cup lightly packed brown sugar
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- ¾ cup almonds, walnuts or combination, coarsely chopped
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Butter a 13-by-9-by-2 or 3-quart baking dish (2 inch sides). Set aside.
- In a large bowl, gently mix all filling ingredients until sugar and spices are evenly distributed. Transfer to prepared dish.
- In the same large bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, flour, and salt.
- Add butter and work with fingers until crumbly.
- Stir in walnuts, almonds, or both. Spread evenly over the fruit.
- Set dish on a parchment-lined sheet pan. Bake for about 50 - 60 minutes, until topping is golden and the fruit is tender and bubbly). Serve warm or at room temperature.
