Roger - Project Open Hand Client

I’d like to take this opportunity to write about a topic that has been on my mind. And, I mean that in the most literal sense: I would like to discuss my hair.

I sometimes wonder, how does a 54-year-old guy who’s been living with HIV since 1989 still have a full-ish head of hair? Well, I think genetics plays a part in it, but my younger brother is practically bald. I’ll tell you what I believe to be the secret of my Alec Baldwin-like tresses. It is consciously creating and living a stress-free life, while maintaining a healthy, nutritious diet.

I have lived in San Francisco since 1992, and I have been a client of Project Open Hand since around 1994. My life in San Francisco has taken many turns – there have been bright, wonderful moments, and other not-so-great times. But throughout all the ups and downs, some things have remained a constant and have helped me to maintain a secure platform or foundation to work from. Project Open Hand has been one of the solid foundations in my life.

Project Open Hand helps clients like me with so many aspects of our challenging lives. Besides providing fresh groceries to stock your fridge, or fully prepared meals if you aren’t able to cook, Project Open Hand also provides nutrition information to help make the right choices on how to stay strong and healthy while living with a debilitating illness.

I think the greatest attribute of Project Open Hand is the community outreach and warm atmosphere the volunteers provide for clients. Beginning with the cordial greeting from the friendly reception staff, to the very helpful and extremely patient volunteers who do your shopping. Project Open Hand is a more than just a one-stop shop pit-stop. It is a place to get nutritional help, run into friends, socialize and get involved in the community.

I feel privileged to be asked to write this article and in my way give back – to show my gratitude for all the support over the years that the Project Open Hand staff and weekly volunteers have given me.

I also appreciate the support by the many unseen people who have chosen to take their time and money to help others. They are all to be congratulated. Sadly, my life has been impacted by HIV and my financial earning power is limited by my dwindling energy level. Knowing Project Open Hand is here, knowing I won’t go hungry has been a true blessing and helps to keep my anxiety and stress at bay.

So, in conclusion, my hair and I would like to thank you for our full body and luxurious luster.
